How Does Crafty Cook Calculate Its Red, Amber and Green (RAG) Ratings

How Does Crafty Cook Calculate Its Red, Amber and Green (RAG) Ratings?

As we have added traffic-light (RAG) ratings to our products, we thought it would be helpful to explain exactly how we calculate them.

The simple answer is that we don’t make the colours up ourselves.

Our ratings are based on the UK government’s voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labelling guidelines, which use the nutritional values per 100g of food to determine whether the levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt should be shown as red, amber or green.

When we calculate the nutritional information for a Crafty Cook product, we analyse all the ingredients within the recipe and determine the nutritional values per 100g. We then compare those figures against the official traffic-light thresholds.

For example:

🟢 Green means the product contains a low amount of that nutrient.

🟠 Amber means it contains a medium amount.

🔴 Red means it contains a high amount.

It’s important to remember that a red rating doesn’t automatically mean a product is “bad”, just as a green rating doesn’t automatically make it “healthy”. The traffic-light system is designed to help consumers compare products quickly and make informed choices based on their individual dietary needs.

At Crafty Cook, transparency is important to us. We want customers to understand exactly what’s in our products and how the information on our labels is calculated.

That’s why, wherever possible, we’ll explain not only the ratings themselves but also the reasoning behind them, helping you make the choices that are right for you and your family.
